“…yes Gene, apparently the killer, Cho Seung-Hui had chained the students in the room, chained the doors closed so that they couldn’t get out. He then started shooting at random, or as far as we know, random people, targeting no one in particular.”
“Terra, have they released the second shooter, so we might get a chance to talk to him?”
“No Gene, but like I said, I have a tape of my interview with the young man, David Williams, who shot the killer. We should have it ready in a moment. I got a chance to talk to him, just after the incident, before the police took him away for questioning. It should be up in–do we have…we do? Ok, yes, Mike, we have the tape ready, here it is.”
“I’m here with David Williams, the young man who shot the killer, Cho Seung-Hui. David, weren’t you reluctant to use your gun, I mean, a student actually carrying a gun to school, that’s–”
“No, I wasn’t reluctant, I saw a guy shooting people…what was I suppose to do, I mean, they were, some of those people were people I know, friends of mine. No, once I realized what was going on, I just, I just pulled and…did what I had to do.”
“But David, with your gun, then there were two guns. Is that a positive thing, with two guns there’s twice the potential for danger. After all, we don’t even know if the shooter would have killed anyone else except the three he shot.”
“Look, I don’t’ know, he might have killed three or he might have killed thirty. But Me and my gun stopped him, however many he intended to kill.”
“Ok, thanks David, I know they’re calling for you, we appreciate your time.”
   “Thank you.”
“That’s the taped interview I had just moments ago. I only had a couple of minutes with him before the police took him in for questioning. Again, David Williams, the young man who had a concealed carry permit, that’s a permit that allows any–literally anyone who passes an FBI background check–to carry a concealed weapon, a gun, anywhere. And he was carrying his gun today of all days, and he, um, he shot, apparently he shot the killer, Cho Seung-Hui, twice, once in the chest and once in the neck, taking him down.”
“Terra, does he, does David Williams carry his gun all the time?”
“Uh, yes Gene, we, I’m sorry to say that we lost part of the interview, I don’t know why, some technical problem, but we had to piece it together, but I can tell you what he told me, he said that he does indeed carry his gun at all times, wherever he goes, but he never dreamed he would ever have to use it, but well, today…he did.”
“Ok, thanks Terra, keep us posted.”
   “I certainly will, Gene.”
“That was Terra Bostwick, our correspondent from our affiliate in Virginia at KMVR. We’ll be checking back with her throughout the day. Just to recap, a lone gunman, Cho Seung-Hui, shot and killed three students after locking them in a cafeteria with many others. He was then, as you just heard from Terra, shot and killed by a student, a junior attending the University at the time, and actually in the room with the gunman and the other students and was carrying a concealed weapon with him. David Williams told Terra that he carried his gun with him all the time. In all, tragically, four dead, including the gunman. I’m Gene Tarrell, and we’ll keep you updated on this terrible incident. Your watching Network News.”
Sadly, that is not the way this tragedy played out. There was no David Williams, no armed citizen, no law abiding person with the skill and weaponry to halt the mayhem that took place at the Virginia University of Technology. There was only one weapon in that room that horrible day–and it was in the hand of a single shooter…the killer. There were momentary breaks in his shooting spree for one reason only. To reload. That shooting spree resulted in thirty-two dead, and many wounded. There was in place a restriction against guns (Virginia Tech is a gun free zone) at the time.
   Cho Seung-Hui ignored it.
I just pray that the next time some crazed maniac pulls a gun in order to murder a number of innocent people, someone like a David Williams is there to pull his own…and stop him.
